The day he took office, President Donald J. Trump made a promise to the American people.
1600 Daily
The White House • April 4, 2019
President Trump: ‘No citizen will be forgotten’

The day he took office, President Donald J. Trump made a promise to the American people. “The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer. Everyone is listening to you now.”

For years, our government didn’t operate that way. Washington put its own interests and grand plans above the basic, everyday needs of our citizens. Outside the Beltway, “a different reality exists,” President Trump said on Inauguration Day—children trapped in poverty in our inner cities, rusted-out factories scattered across our heartland, and crime and drugs rooted in too many of our communities.

Today, President Trump took another major step toward reversing that decline and restoring the American Dream for all.

Speaking from the Cabinet Room, the President kicked off the inaugural meeting of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, which will lead the Administration’s effort to renew hope and dignity in distressed parts of our country. Scott Turner, a former NFL player and state legislator, will oversee the Council’s work.

“This is very close to my heart,” Turner said.

Fifty-two million Americans live in economically distressed communities. Despite the historic streak of job creation and wage growth under President Trump, these areas are often plagued by high poverty levels, failing schools, and a scarcity of jobs. To reverse their fortunes, the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act created massive incentives for investment in these places, creating jobs and opportunities where they are needed the most.

The early returns are incredible in these “Opportunity Zones,” which cover 8,700 communities across all 50 states. Property sale prices have soared more than 20 percent annually in these zones, building wealth for the people who live there and encouraging more economic activity in the process.

The new Council, under Turner’s leadership, will build on this success. “Our actions will directly improve the lives of countless low-income Americans,” President Trump said today. “Together we can lift up every forgotten community.”

The Trump tax cut boom, by the numbers

Video of the day: Smugglers push children through barbed wire barrier
On December 18, U.S. Border Patrol captured footage of human smugglers pushing family units through an old, barbed-wire section of border fencing near Yuma, Arizona. The image of children being forced along in this journey speaks louder than any words can.

This is the crisis Congressional Democrats and their media allies don’t want you to see—and the one President Trump is fighting to end.

【Reply by e-mail from President Trump 2019-02-07】

February 6, 2019

Thank you for taking the time to write. My staff is closely reviewing your correspondence.
In last night’s State of the Union address, I updated Congress and the American people on the strong state of our Nation, the pressing issues we face, and my vision for 2019. Over the past two years, we have made significant strides toward a stronger and more prosperous Nation, and in many ways, our country is doing better than ever before.
We have advanced an agenda that includes lowering taxes, eliminating unnecessary and burdensome regulations, and standing up for America’s interests abroad—and our country and our economy are thriving. Much work remains to be done to fully restore our Nation’s greatness—starting with resolving the growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border.
I encourage you to watch last’s night’s speech to hear my vision for a stronger, safer, and prouder future. May God bless the United States of America.
Donald Trump

Trump orders mental health support for military veterans to prevent suicide
Reuters

Reuters reports that President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order yesterday that directs government departments to take steps to prevent suicide among veterans by way of mental health treatment.

“Trump's order directs the departments of Defense, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs to ensure all uniformed service members have access to mental health treatment and suicide prevention resources in the first year following military service,” Reuters writes. "That 12-month period after you leave service is the highest risk for suicide," Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin told reporters.

Your 1600 Daily:

Rebuilding rural America
Today, President Donald J. Trump travels to Nashville, Tennessee, to deliver a major address at the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Annual Meeting. It will mark the first time since 1992 an American president has spoken at the event.
That symbolism is important. From his earliest days on the campaign trail, President Trump has highlighted the difference in prosperity between rural America and the country’s wealthiest coastal enclaves.
One sentence explains why this message resonated across America’s interior. It comes from the opening lines of a report from President Trump’s Agriculture and Rural Prosperity Task Force, which the President will share during his speech today: “While other sectors of the American economy have largely recovered from the Great Recession, rural America has lagged in almost every indicator.”
Watch the President’s speech live at 4:10 p.m. ET.

Council of Economic Advisers: 2017 was a ‘banner year’
This week, the President’s Council of Economic Advisers weighed in on why “2017 was a banner year for the United States labor market.”
In the Council’s own words:
“The economy added 2.1 million jobs and reversed job losses in critical sectors, most notably in manufacturing.”
“Unemployment rates for America’s veterans, African-Americans, and Hispanics . . . reached historic lows in 2017.”
“The first wave of tax reform job and wage gains should produce continued tightness in the labor market and thus bigger take-home checks for workers.”

Your 1600 Daily:

‘The defining accomplishment of his first year’
In the closing days of 2017, President Donald J. Trump’s critics and supporters alike ticked off the major achievements of his first year in office: tax cuts, Neil Gorsuch’s appointment to the Supreme Court, and a booming stock market, among others.
Yet the Bureau of Land Management’s reversal last month of an Obama-era energy policy flew largely under the radar, and it underscores one of the crucial missions of this presidency.
“The Trump administration rounded out the Year of Deregulation in appropriate fashion, rescinding a rule intended to punish oil and gas producers,” the Las Vegas Review-Journal wrote in an editorial this week. That regulation “would have added millions of dollars to the cost of fracking operations” with duplicative red tape.
Here’s the key: “Fracking is already subjected to scores of regulations at the federal, state and tribal levels. That won’t change,” the editorial says. In other words, simplifying government doesn’t mean it’s going away.
Read why the Review-Journal says deregulation may be what matters most.

Saying what we mean
“To see the people of Iran rising up to demand change in their country should hearten every freedom-loving American,” Vice President Mike Pence told Greta Van Susteren in an interview yesterday.
The Vice President’s point was simple: An America that’s clear about what it stands for has a genuine opportunity to shape a world that’s freer and more democratic. And we can do so peacefully.
“My hope, and really my prayer, is that the people of Iran — a youthful population, a well-educated population — understand that the United States of America and the people of this country are their natural ally.”
See what Van Susteren asked the Vice President about Iran and North Korea.

Getting to ‘yes’ on a bipartisan budget deal
Yesterday, Republicans and Democrats in Congress outlined their priorities for a two-year bipartisan spending agreement.
The White House and Republican leadership on Capitol Hill were clear about what they expect from a deal. “The American people deserve a government that funds our great military, protects our borders, and leads to a more prosperous future for all,” they said in a joint statement.

Your 1600 Daily:

Who America stands with
In the final days of 2017, the biggest anti-government protests in Iran since 2009 broke out. Demonstrations have now spread to at least 20 cities across the country.
“Years of mismanagement, corruption, and foreign adventurism have eroded the Iranian people’s trust in their leaders,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said. “The Iranian regime spends its people’s wealth on spreading militancy and terror abroad, rather than ensuring prosperity at home.”
US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley delivered a clear message at the UN yesterday, warning the international body that it cannot afford to repeat the mistake it made in 2009 by staying quiet.
“We must not be silent. The people of Iran are crying out for freedom.”
See what Ambassador Haley told the UN.

The forgotten American idea
James Pinkerton—co-chair of the bipartisan RATE Coalition, which stands for “Reforming America’s Taxes Equitably”—weighed in on the Republican Tax Cuts Act over the weekend in an op-ed for The Hill.
Pinkerton’s thesis? In polarized times, it’s easy to let partisan instincts cloud what should be a bipartisan consensus. “It should not be forgotten that the idea of using lower tax rates to stimulate growth is not just a Republican idea—it’s an American idea,” he writes.
“The soundest way to raise the revenues in the long run is to cut the rates now.” Those words didn't come from President Donald J. Trump—or even President Ronald Reagan.
They are from Democratic President John F. Kennedy.
Read Pinkerton’s bipartisan case for tax cuts.

Looking back on year one of #MAGA
As President Trump and his Administration dive into a long list of priorities for 2018, it’s worth looking back on how far America has come in just one year.
$5.5 trillion in tax cuts, 60 percent of which go to families
The lowest unemployment rate in nearly 17 years
22 regulations eliminated for each new one enacted
A record-setting 12 conservative federal circuit judges confirmed
And that list barely scratches the surface. See the full year one breakdown here.
